I’m Also Not Drinking Anymore … Are the Two Decisions Connected?

A few weeks ago, my partner and I decided we’d quit drinking. He suggested it one day, mentioning that he just didn’t need the calories and it would be the easiest thing to cut out of his life.

He used to drink a LOT — something like a bottle of red wine a day. He wasn’t walking around (or driving) drunk because he also takes medicine that keeps the alcohol from affecting his brain. But it did affect his body with extra calories and a relaxing bodily effect. With a lot of stress from work, the soothing physical effect seemed helpful … until it began to feel unhealthy.

As for me, I perked up at the announcement. “I’ll join you!” I said. I don’t need to drink two beers a day, or three or four a day on the weekends.

My dark beer hobby

I lived most of my life without beer until I dated a guy about 10 years ago who introduced me to expensive beer. The difference between that and the swill I had drunk at high school keggers was astonishing. I quickly realized that I liked dark beer. Who knew? I found a taste for coffee beer, chocolate beer, pumpkin beer, hot chili-infused beer. I spent the next few years trying a new variety every week, checking out the seasonals and the…
